Icelandic students of Permaculture Design, enjoying the free benefits of solar energy.
Because our civilization is massively founded on oil in all its uses, we clearly need to develop a technology that is less dependent upon oil. There’s no need to panic, we have a century to do so, but not to address the situation at all is obviously going to lead to chaos and trouble when oil begins to become scarcer and more expensive. This is something we will begin to experience in the next few decades.
The profligate use of oil as our right and fighting wars with other nations in order to control the sources of our oil is a loser’s strategy. There is enough for everyone’s need, but not for everyone’s greed. If we could use the resources at our disposal to find alternatives to oil, we could save ourselves a lot of trouble and a great deal of human tragedy.
Most scientists who have researched the changing climate on our planet over the last decades have reached a common conclusion that our technology is contributing to climate change. This is usually referred to as “global warming” or “climate change” but our experience of this is more in the realm of increasingly chaotic and unpredictable weather conditions. Whatever we call it, there are solutions to be found in our technologies, and these are neither very expensive, nor very complicated.
Indeed, most of them are already right there under our noses, and just need to be developed. In energy we have solar, wind and wave waiting to be harnessed, and indeed they are already becoming an increasing factor. In materials use we have many alternatives to oil-based technologies. In agriculture, organic farming is viable, increasing and has even been shown to be healthier than industrial/chemical agribusiness: a real free side effect!
For carbon capture we have tree planting, something most people can engage in. All the solutions, all the answers, they are right there. They don’t need to be invented. Their application is not a technical issue, but is based on a new consciousness.
Compassion is a solution to all our problems. Compassion for the planet and all who travel on her is a way of entering the new spiritualty that we need to rescue the ship we call Earth.
